Fished the Sunset Beach bridge Thursday afternoon and early evening looking for black drum. After nightfall I could have had all the 12 to 14 inch black drum I wanted. Caught about 20 until they tired me out, kept about eight to fillet for supper tomorrow night.
Also caught some spot but the size wasn’t great. However, I did land some rather large (for the species) silver perch among the black drum and those will go into the frying pan too.
Tom, who runs the deli on the island, was trout fishing beside me during the daylight hours. He caught one spike trout, but he hooked a real beauty and brought it to the top of the water only to lose it there. We both saw it, a big ol’ gator trout. Shame it got away.
He said he’s been catching them lately using Billy Bay Halo Shrimp under corks. That jibes with what Captain Mark Dickson has posted on his site, as he’s been catching the big trout around the same bridge on his boat with live shrimp.
I was content with the black drum, spot and perch and will eat well tomorrow. I also caught a monster eel that unhooked himself right in front of me and slithered about ten feet back into the water. Those eels are strong, determined things.
The new bridge is coming up more and more every time I go, and it looks like this will be the last winter I get to bang the drums at my favorite fishing hole, as the old one is set to be torn down. Makes the trips more special and the fishing more fun, though, knowing it won’t last forever.
